[Solved] KDE and Wifi Issues

Hi, I got a new laptop recently and I thought I'll install arch again as I didnt get to use it much on my older comp. Took me a day to set it up. The only annoying problem was wifi. Got it temporarily enabled using one of the wiki arch articles on wireless networks. Then I got KDE. KDE was working fine, I was looking for a wifi manager, saw the wiki on NetworkManager, but it was too complicated. Then I saw network settings in system settings in kde, added a profile to that and net was working fine.

After that randomly screen goes blank and I see the NVIDIA screen and kde login comes. The crashes keep occuring whenever I enter settings. And the profile I created doesnt automatically connect to the wifi network which makes me keep wanting to go to network settings.

Any fixes?

I am not new to linux, I had used ubuntu for quite some time & this is my second arch installation.

I uninstalled networkmanager, cuz it was a pain. And also for sure the crash occurs when I click on settings or network settings, I barely reach network settings.

To check my understanding:

You did do

pacman -S kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement

and then removed it in response to your problem?

Does ethernet work?

What does ifconfig tell you?

Curious about your hardware.  What wireless chipset/card does your machine use?

look for error messages in /var/log. You MAY find something related to the exact cause of the problem there in the log files

Curious about your hardware.  What wireless chipset/card does your machine use?

1) I saw in the networkmanager guide that I needed to install that(plasma applet) so I did and later I removed it and then network manager

2)Ethernet works

3)I'll post the result of ifconfig after reboot

4)Its an Intel Wireless 5300 AGN

ifconfig gives me details on the lo interface

I checked the log folder using console, checked two files.

Kdm.log

Klauncher(994) kdemain: no Dbus session-bus found. Check if you started the dbus server
Kdeinit: communication error with launcher. Exiting!
Kdmgreet/kdecore (k*timezone): ksystemtimezones: ktimezoned initialize() D-bus call failed: "Not connected to D-bus server"

(as far as i know dbus is there for sure in the daemons section of rc.conf)

Errors.log
Kdm_greet: Cannot load /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces/default.face : no such file or directory
Kdm(981):X server for display terminated unexpectedly

The above two errors are repeated and are also timed around when my kde crashed and restarted.

installing wi-cd kde will also fix the kde crashes?

Another thing, after I exited console and then just to see if it crashes again, I went to system settings/network settings and it crashed.

if it crashes only when you change/select network settings i would suggest you to try wicd-kde.

There was no wicd-kde there was wicd and wicd-gtk, I got wicd and the problem still exists.
Infact even if I dont enter network settings, I just enter settings and scroll down towards network settings and it crashes and comes to login screen. I cant even figure how to use wicd though.

I think they meant wicd-kde-git from the AUR (it has wicd as a dependency)

As for using wicd there is a page on the wiki

yes , i meant wicd-kde-git . You also need to tell KDE you are using wicd - not nm. Check both wicd and KDE wiki pages

Ok noob question but how can I confirm that I have added aur repository?

And how do i tell kde to NOT use networkmanager?

And I did mention that my kde restarts even when I glance at system settings, how do I fix that?

I Checked out xorg.0.log and .xsession-errors
What am I supposed to be looking for? I didn't find anything related to the crashes.

Thinking if I should install arch again, these kde crashes are annoying. The only hesitation present is cuz kde takes a long time to download.

Post them after a crash
For .xsession-errors to be relevant (it's overriden at each login), when KDE crashes, ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to a virtual terminal,
cp .xsession-errors{,-crash}
and post here the Xorg.0.log and .xsession-errors-crash in [ code ] tag (without spaces)

I installed arch again. Has no xorg atm. Theres only one problem at present wifi.

When I installed arch again, in one of the dev-level packages I saw my wifi cards package, I installed that so I dont have to get it later.
I updated arch using pacman -Syu. Wasnt able to get sudo for some reason, anyway now the problem is that, on entering "dhcpcd wlan0" it always gets timed out. Ethernet was working fine and on entering iwconfig it also shows my wireless network, I'm just not able to get an ip.

I use these commands

ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid ESSID key KEYKEYKEY
iwconfig wlan0 channel auto

Now when I type iwconfig I can see the access point as my router, but on entering dhcpcd wlan0 I always get timed out.
My rc.conf has my wlan0 listed in network interfaces too.

So you're assuming my kwin is crashing cuz of desktop effects. I'll try to switch them off but it's hard as my kde restarts on even glancing at settings.
