[SOLVED]Can't play audio CD

Hi all,

I'm having trouble getting an audio CD to play. I've used VLC and Rhythmbox. The same applies to DVDs, but that's another problem.
It all started a few months back, when that HAL issue with mounting external devices popped up. I managed to work around that using pcmanfm, but Audio CDs won't work at all.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED]Can't play audio CD

so are you using udev rules or udisks now to auto-mount devices?

I am honestly not sure. I've been using PFManFM with dbus for automounting, and when I don't use that, I just mount it by hand with

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usb

and

sudo umount /dev/sdb1

Sorry for my ignorance on this matter.

Re: [SOLVED]Can't play audio CD

You can't mount audio CDs and blank media. You need to access it via the application you're using to play e.g. music.

Since a recent udev update cd (and net) persistent rules will no longer be autogenerated - maybe that's your problem.

I know that I can't mount audio CDs and blank media. The thing is, I can't find them via the applications I'm supposed to use to access them.

Why is your CD showing up as an sd* instead of an sr*?

Are you referring to

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usb

? I think that's an example of mounting a usb by hand and has nothing to do w/ audio CD issues.

Ah okay.

So then as karol said, do you even have a /dev/sr0?

Ah, okay. I've found /dev/sr0, thanks for the info. Wasn't sure what to look for in the first place. Now that I can play it, I can move onto the hairy mess that is ripping audio CDs.

You could add a udev rule that generates /dev/cdrom or other symlinks. I'm not sure, but that could be what karol also referred to. Some applications become quite awkward to use without such symlinks, be it for cd or dvd media.
