Tethering with Froyo

Hi,

I just updated my Defy to Froyo and looked forward to use tethering now, but it doesn't work here.

As written in the wiki I loaded the module usbnet but there's no usb0.

Am I missing a package?

\edit: Before anyone aks: yes, tethering is activated on my phone

He's trying to use the cabled/usb method, not wifi tethering.

Re: Tethering with Froyo

Yes, the phone is connected via USB cable. My froyo doesn't offer wifi tethering.

Re: Tethering with Froyo

Starting with Froyo, Motorola has switched to some proprietary usbnet thingy. With Eclair, they were using rndis. They provide a Windows driver for this new thingy, but Linux is currently without an appropriate driver. EasyTether works, but the free version of that doesn't allow visiting https sites.

Re: Tethering with Froyo

Gusar, thanks for the information.

How about tethering via bluetooth? I can find my device but only for sharing files.

No idea. I know how to do it with my old Nokia phone, but I haven't tried the same thing with my Defy yet.

Ok, I just tried. Listing all bluetooth services of the phone, Dial-up Networking is not one of them. So the same method won't work. I'm using CyanogenMod though, and maybe I'm missing some setting somewhere. Try something for me:
- activate bluetooth on the phone, and make it visible
- on the computer, run 'hcitool scan' and note down the bdaddress of the phone
- scan for services: 'sdptool browse <bdaddress_of_phone>'
- what you need is the channel of the Dial-up Networking service
- modify /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf, adjusting the channel accordingly, it was channel 2 on my old Nokia:

#
# RFCOMM configuration file.
#

rfcomm0 {
    # Automatically bind the device at startup
    bind yes;

    # Bluetooth address of the device
    device <bdaddress_of_phone>

    # RFCOMM channel for the connection
    channel 2;

    # Description of the connection
    comment "Dial-Up Networking";
}

- restart the bluetooth service: /etc/rc.d/bluetooth restart
- now /dev/rfcomm0 is your modem, use your favorite dial-up tool, like wvdial, the number to dial is *99#

Where it fails for me is that 'sdptool browse' doesn't list a Dial-up service, just a few others. But I'll do a search, maybe I'll find something out.

Re: Tethering with Froyo

Thanks again,

I don't know what channel to chose. I have:

MAP MASn
OBEX Phonebook Access Serverame
OBEX Object Push
Voice Gateway

Same as me, then. So far what I've been able to find out is that PdaNet can create Bluetooth DUN. But as with EasyTether, the free version of PdaNet doesn't allow https sites.

I find this very crazy, that Android doesn't have this stuff built-in. Their excuse will probably be carriers don't allow it, but seriously, old phones can all do this. And the carriers can go eff themselves.

Edit: Oh, I just remembered something. Is your Defy rooted? If yes, thy this: https://market.android.com/details?id=i … theringusb. I briefly tried, but it didn't work on CyanogenMod, it said it can't get root, even though Cyanoged is by default rooted. The chances it'll work are small though, it requires the phone to be in Motorola Portal mode, so I think it requires Motorola USB drivers.

Re: Tethering with Froyo

Wired usb works awesome if you are rooted!! Just plug it in, touch 'start tethering' on the phone, and then '# dhcpcd usb0' on the computer. Im using my phone as a temporary wifi adapter for my desktop :-P

Not on the Defy though, same reason, we're missing a Motorola driver. If you're on Windows and install Motorola USB drivers, it'll indeed work. Someone here claims they have it working on Ubuntu, but they didn't provide any info: http://code.google.com/p/android-wired- … tail?id=32

Re: Tethering with Froyo

I can't believe Motorola makes tethering  unusable on linux.

My phone isn't rooted but I now tried out EasyTether on another device that's running ubuntu.

I've seen that there's an AUR package for the drivers and I consider buying the full version of EasyTether and I'm really disappointed about Motorla.
