kernel naming conventions mainline vs stable (kernel.org)

With all the "linux 3.0" hype around, I browsed over to kernel.org and noticed that it reports that v2.6.39.3 is the current stable release, while 3.0 is the "mainline" release.  Can someone explain to me what the difference between the two categories might be?  Mainline = beta or something that's not quite ready to be called stable?

There's a link to the kernel.org FAQ on that page - the first question is the one you want.
