I have a problem with Android USB tethering. It just doesn't work.
I found the wiki page about this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/An … _tethering But it not helped. With normal tethering I can't see the usb0, openvpn simply not working, don't know why, everything seems ok, there is no error messages, but there's just no internet connection, and the proxy is not enough.
Wireless tether is working, but the connection is always dropped by Wicd and by Networkmanager, too. It's almost useless, I have to reconnect in every 5-10 minutes.

What, so everyone's supposed to sleep every single night now? You realize that nighttime makes up half of all time?

what type of phone do you have out of curiosity? i have the HTC eris, and i use PDA-NET to tether
PDA-NET needs a desktop client which works only in Windows and OS X.
Easy Tether seems working (and the client is in the AUR), but I can't reach too many pages, like this one, Google+, all the pages which need HTTPS.

CyanogenMod 7 re-enabled USB tethering a few nightlies ago, for what it's worth... Haven't tried it yet. Wireless tethering is stable for me though (ZTE Blade).

That's by design. They want you to buy the full version for https.
There's also Klink. Also requires buying the full version for https, but it's cheaper than EasyTether, is a one-man development effort (so you're "rooting for the underdog") and his main platform is Linux (so you can be sure the Linux client is top-notch), and I've also read it's design - lots of native code, as little Dalvik as possible - makes it the most efficient.

Ooh, that sounds nice. Hmm, what are the chances it'll work on a Defy? Low probably, considering we can't install a custom kernel. But I have another reason to switch to a nightly - they've added Crystal Talk. So I might install a nightly today and then I can report about USB tethering on a Defy.

When I used tethering last weekend I had to manually modprobe rndis_host (after usbnet) for usb0 to appear (using a Nexus One). Relevant lsmod output:
Module Size Used by
rndis_host 4735 0
cdc_ether 3482 1 rndis_host
usbnet 12942 2 rndis_host,cdc_etherOffline

There's a lengthy thread over at XDA Developers.

I know, I follow it regularly. But there's no talk about usb thethering in there. A bug is open: https://github.com/CyanogenDefy/android … /issues/16 but as you can see, no discussion there.
I need to charge the battery, then I'll flash a nightly, but I don't really have much hope. It probably requires a custom kernel, but until Motorola blesses us with an unlocked bootloader we can't install one.

Nope, I simply doesn't have usb0 interface. In dmesg output there is my phone, but I can't do anything without usb0.

Klink doesn't work, it cannot find the phone. EasyTether is working, but $9,99... f*ck, I think I have to buy it if I can't find a solution.

Well, a custom kernel wasn't necessary, I got USB tethering working on the Defy with the latest CM7 nightly. Had to do some manual tinkering, but it works. Though it's the Atrix guys that provided the necessary code to configure the usb controller properly. Man, I love it how Motorola devices are being hacked into oblivion...
@freyr: you never did say which phone you have and whether you're running any custom rom.

Congrats. Have used USB tethering myself multiple times in the meantime, it works pretty stable on CM7
