ArchLinux.com domain

The ArchLinux.com domain redirects to some really suspicious, and likely malicious, advertising website.

Anyone know what's up with this? I would think the domain would already be owned by Arch Linux.

I understand that, but the domain was bought out by someone else, and I couldn't remember if it was .org or .com. I'm coming back after a year-long hiatus, it was a bit of a surprise.

Re: ArchLinux.com domain

.net is taken but .info is up for grabs.

As long as e.g. google search suggests the right places, we're fine.

This is not uncommon. Eg python.com used to go to a porn site. Great fun at work when silly boss types .com instead of .org as told. Much yelling followed.

While not uncommon, it is illegal as Arch Linux is a registered trademark.

But archlinux.com looks to me like any other placeholder.

Re: ArchLinux.com domain

bbs.archlinux.com (the forum URL except .com instead of .org) linked me to some survey skinned with Facebook fonts.  They're out there, I can attest to that fact.

It is not registered AFAIK, it is only "recognized"...

The Arch Linux name and logo are recognized trademarks. Some rights reserved.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … Trademarks

And I'm sure the dev team has better things to do than spend money, time and effort on obtaining additional domains.

A quick search leads me to believe that "registered" and "recognized" mean the same thing but I may be wrong.

When in doubt, ask the wiki

fukawi2 already pointed that out but it doesn't help when determining if there is a difference between registered and recognized trademarks.

Registering gives you a firmer legal ground than common law:

A registered trade-mark has been approved and entered on the Trade-mark Register held by the Trade-marks Office. Registration is proof of ownership. An unregistered trade-mark may also be recognized through Common Law as the property of the owner, depending on the circumstances.

Thanks for pointing that out.
