[solved] Backup emails

Hi,

I have a new employer and thus my old email account is about to expire and the mails will be deleted on the server.

Because I still need some of them I'd like to now what ways there are to backup a whole account to access is when needed.

Thanks!

Re: [solved] Backup emails

What do you need? It's a "normal" IMAP account that isn't accessible for me at Sep, 1st.

So I need a way to archive my old mails for later offline access.

Well, you can create a Thunderbird account, synchronize all messages locally with never delete any message option.

or

if you have enough storage space you can tell gmail or whatever to download all messages from the account. Of course you need an email provider with the "account import" function.

or

tell your employer to export all your messages to dvd for you.

Getmail does IMAP. I found it very reliable for the years I used it.

+1 for offlineimap

or maybe imapsync to clone your account on a local server (also possible with offlineimap)...

Re: [solved] Backup emails

First and foremost, make sure that what you are trying to do is legal in your country and your company. Most times the emails exchanged are deemed to be the property of the company and not you. So taking them along when you are no longer a part of the company may pose legal consequences.

Also, you haven't mentioned what email server you use. If this is like any other workplace using Windows, then it has no place on the Arch Linux forums.

Yup. I backup my GMail using it with git:

Kind of a harsh assessment of the topic there IMHO.... What if the OP is using Arch Linux on his/her desktop/laptop?

Well he said it was a place of his employment. So it could be company property. That's why I mentioned that if his place of employment is like most others, then they could be using Windows. The keyword being "if"

Re: [solved] Backup emails

Thanks for your replies.

Yes, the head of the department ask me to save the mails and I also was free to use Arch on my office machine smile

For what I've seen it looks like offlineimap is the tool I was looking for.

Thanks again!
