I just tried to SSH into my server but it shut me out (authentication is key-only, which has been working well since when I set it up first).
This is what it spits out:

Connection closed by 10.0.0.15As you can see the server accepts the key yet locks me out. Any clues? Powercycling it did not help.

I'd look inside /var/log/auth.log for hints.

for that he has to get access to the machine.

It's my own server, so if that's necessary, I can do that, but I'd rather not - onboard GPU is disabled, and it's just the box itself sitting there on the network.

Well, looks like rtorrent isn't running anymore on my server either, and that's launched with my UID. So it looks like an account configuration problem... I have some reconfiguration to do.

Okay. So I managed to hook up my server to a monitor and keyboard. It won't even let me in on a tty - I can type a username, press Enter, but never get a password prompt, it just throws me right back to the login prompt again.
Booting from a USB stick reveals there is a problem with PAM and libtirpc - the pam_unix.so module fails to load because libtirpc.so.1 reports an undefined symbol _des_crypt_call. Seems to be fixed by a libtirpc reinstall
.
