Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

Hi,

I have kde 4 along with openbox and pcmanfm, my problem is very odd and havent seen anything like this before. Dolphin has no problems at all and any other program on my pc opens/runs normally.

Whenever I try to mount a hard drive or partition onto pcmanfm I get:

Error: File doesnt exist

So I figured it was a permission problem so I tried running pcmanfm as root, so I type in "sudo pcmanfm" on a terminal and I got the following error:

No protocol specified
Cannot open display:

I think this is an Xorg error but I have no idea why it will manifest only when I try to run pcmanfm with sudo, I also tried su method (ie. su, then input password, then on root terminal type pcmanfm, same result).

Sudo works fine and any other program I try to open via sudo works no problems, It seems very odd to me that works for one user and not for the root account.

I have dbus on my daemons array.

I would really appreciatte any help you can provide!

cheers

Re: Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

karol, thanks for your reply, Im guessing running kdesu pcmanfm will solve the root issue, but what about opening the hard drives/partitions? I checked the wiki entry of pcmanfm and didnt help me.

thanks for your help

Re: Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

I'm not familiar with the GUI things, I mount partitions by hand. Are you running pcmanfm under KDE? Try installing gvfs (I don't know if there's a KDE equivalent)

Re: Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

My setup is as follows: I have KDE4 installed but used openbox session for a lighter desktop and im testing it for a while before removing KDE, so with lighter desktop I need a lighter file manager and thats where pcmanfm come in. I will try/read your suggestions posted here and come back at night with results. thanks a lot

Re: Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

ok Im back, unfortunately, none of the provided links/information helped me, tried everything and still problem persists, Im guessing at this point it might be a bug with program, anyways my solution was to (unfortunately) uninstall pcmanfm and give thunar a try, im liking it more so far than pcmanfm big_smile

I guess I can fill out a bug report but dont know the proper place to do it (archlinux bug tracker or pcmanfm's homepage)

Re: Pcmanfm "no protocol specified" error when running as root

have you already tried any of the pcmanfm packages available in the AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O … _Search=Go ?
