You have got to be joking !!

How much experience do you have with Linux in general? I do not mean to ridicule here, but Arch might not be for you if you have to ask that. Have you heard about the basic "cp" command ?

How are you posting here? You have a working Internet connection on this computer / system. Use it to post the output of the commands.

creative2innovative, check the network section in /etc/rc.conf again please. There should be examples there for setting a static or dynamic (dhcp) network connection.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect to the net..!!

Do you have a router? If so, when the ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1, then try this:

$ ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0
$ ifconfig eth0 up
$ ping 192.168.1.1

[ ... do you see any output here? ...]

$ dhcpcd

I tried again. I installed arch again. When i did the new installation there was no eth0 interface being detected. This means that my network card module is not detected. So now what should i do next ??

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect to the net..!!

Please excuse my interference with your posts.  The posting of my rc.conf is not for kernel26 but is the rc.conf for the new Linux-3.0.2-1.

When you edited the rc.conf in the install configs, what did you enter for the network?

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect to the net..!!

I used archlinux-2010.05-core-x86_64 iso .

In rc.conf  i edited the hostname and nothing else.

When i google my prob on net, i came across a solution which suggested using releng arch iso files which are upldated than the  current stable iso of arch linux provided here and the prob which he was facing was almost similar to me, and by doing this he's problem  got solved...!! is that true, that using releng iso will help me in detecting my network interface ??

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect to the net..!!

My recent use of the stated .iso utilized ftp install.  This is advised because you have to get the internet established during the install so it will obviously be available after the downloads are completed.

This step is provided in the install sequence and requires that you select an ftp mirror from the mirror list provided,

This procedure will install the latest kernel into your machine.  I do not know if that is a kernel26 install at this time or a linux-3.0.2-1.  I would expect it to be kernel26.  If it turns out to be linux, the details for grub will likely be inserted for you.  The rc.conf details are still required with either linux or kernel26.

The kernel supplied with the .iso is out of date badly so the FTP method avoids that but as I say I don't know what happens in view of the new linux kernel with respect to the usual kernel26.

Either way, your internet must be up for the FTP install and you are given steps to initiate it in the install.

Maybe this will get you up and running with internet and the latest version of one of the kernel types.

I used it recently.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect to the net..!!

After you get the reboot, there are several pacman procedures necessary.  Firstly, ....pacman-db-upgrade...entered with no spaces between words.

Then setup the mirrorlist in /etc/pacman.d.

Then run ...pacman -Syy ... to sync to the mirrors.

You can then run pacman -Syu if desired to install linux-3.0.2-1x86_64.pkg.tar.xz along with other items...assuming that you booted in kernel26.  (The download will remove kernel26)  You may have to clean up the grub file other than the menu.lst by removing the kernel26 files there abouts in the grub window.

If not kernel26, you may need to edit the grub as required for linux kernel altho I think that version 3.0.2-1  does the grub editing.  You may be able to boot , initially, after reaching Desktop, edit /etc/boot/grub/menu.lst to reflect the correct entries as given in the archlinux news...kernel /vmlinuz-linux and initrd /initramfs-linux.img.
Good luck.....................

I think "Unable to connect to the net with pppoe" would suffice, although i gather that you have lost your eth0 connection altogether now? Since you're still learning linux and Arch, it would probably make your life a lot simpler if you could hook up a router at home, that is usually also a bit more secure than connecting to the internet directly from your computer.

P.s., if you connect directly from your desktop, how are you using the forums here? I assume you don't have two modems at home?
