I installed the 8.19 release of archlinux on virtual box hosted by windows xp
and installed the guest addition
but when I startx
Gnome 3 failed to load.
error : This most likely means your system (graphics hardware or driver) is not capable of delivering the full gnome 3 experience
Now what else can I do ?

yeah there was a thread about this. For some reason, virtualbox wasn't capable of loading gnome-shell at the time. I am not sure if it ever got resolved. Search the forum for that thread and you might find a solution if there is one.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

works out of the box
#pacman -S xorg-server virtualbox-archlinux-additions gnome gdm
# /etc/rc.d/dbus start
# modprobe vboxvideo
# /etc/rc.d/gdm start
enjoy your gnome 3 experience in virtualbox
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I find this thread from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=125694
Thanks wonder first. As a newbie I got this problem too and I spend an hour to search a solution on google. Finally I ended here and running my gnome in VBOX now. But my Graphic Card GMA3100 is not very good, I am not able to have a fully functioned interface of Gnome3.
