Microcode SW error detected on Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN

I'm running Arch with Kernel 3.0 on a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14" and I've never managed to get my wireless working.

On my DE, Gnome 3, the wireless connection option always show up as "Unavailable". I'm using the NetworkManager module instead of Network, by the way.

Upon doing

dmesg | grep iwlagn

, these show up:

I've tried checking here and other forums about the microcode SW error, but it seems like there's a bunch of different errors that could cause it, so now I'm lost.

Is there any way I could fix this? How should I go about fixing this?

Thanks in advance!

This rather belongs to Networking.
Moving.

Re: Microcode SW error detected on Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN

Is there any way I could fix this? How should I go about fixing this?

From what I can tell, you don't.

I went poking into the Intel wireless driver code (their developer's must think like I do because I found it fairly straight forward to follow)... and if my amateur snooping is correct, I found that:

  • When you see this: "Microcode SW error detected." it means that the Intel firmware itself encountered a problem, set a bit in a register, and caused a linux interrupt.

  • This caused the driver to dump the firmware registers (Start IWL Error Log Dump:)

  • In your case, the "error_id" in that dump is SYSASSERT. Which doesn't sound very good.

  • The 0x00000616 | line section of that dump is the firmware source code line of error.

So my guess is that either the firmware itself has a bug, or your system is somehow setting up the Intel wireless chip incorrectly... which may be possible... this guy seems to have created a firmware SYSASSERT by trying some wpa_supplicant code:

http://www.lamolabs.org/blog/6049/debug … fedora-14/

But without knowing what's at line 0x616 in the firmware, I think fixing it yourself is going to be difficult. So I'd say you probably need to tap the Linux guy at Intel on the shoulder and show him the problem.

Re: Microcode SW error detected on Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN

bernarcher:
Ah, thanks! I didn't see the Networking section when I was posting.

pigiron:
Oh wow, thanks for the info! I guess I'll have more things to learn from this.

But for now, is there a way to use another firmware with my Intel chip?  My card is the 1000 WiFi Link BGN. Since Intel says after kernel2.6.24 the driver has been merged into mainline, I'm not sure if it's ok to install the 1000 firmware from here: http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads. Should I?

And since you mentioned the intel firmware itself encountered a problem, I should report this as a bug to the

linux-firmware

package maintainer, right?

Re: Microcode SW error detected on Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN

I'm not sure if it's ok to install the 1000 firmware from here: http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads. Should I?

I noticed that web page yesterday. But if you look closely, the available version for your chip already matches the version you're using. I did not download it anyway and check if the "md5sum" matches with whats on my machine... you might try that to verify that what your using isn't corrupted.

Also, if you hit the link on that web page for the "experimental page", you'll see another version for your adapter, but the date stamp is older and was used to experiment with the problem in the first web link I gave.

And since you mentioned the intel firmware itself encountered a problem, I should report this as a bug to the

My guess is that you probably need to talk to the Intel folks... If it were me, I'd try the "Bugzilla" link at the bottom of here:

http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/

and notice what they say about reporting firmware errors.

Re: Microcode SW error detected on Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 BGN

pigiron:

Ah yes, you're right -- the version I have is the same as the one listed there. It's grouped with the other firmware in the linux-firmware package, so I guess downloading that wouldn't be of any help.

I did end up reporting this bug to the iwlagn developers. Upon searching their bug database for similar errors, I stumbled upon this: http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/ … gi?id=2314

This problem pops up in Debian testing dan Fedora as well, so it seems like something's wrong with the driver in mainline kernel.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes then -- hopefully this can be fixed soon. Thanks for pointing me there, by the way! I think this is the first time I reported a kernel-related bug big_smile..
