Selecting locales with modifiers

Hi,

I'm a GNOME translator. I translate it into Catalan (Valencian). This is a variant of Catalan that uses the modifier @valencia on translations. Catalan uses the «ca» code, Catalan (Valencian) uses the ca@valencia locale code.

This works on Ubuntu/Debian and OpenSUSE, but I've tried to choose this locale on Arch, but it seems it doesn't work. This is what I've done:

I've added a line to the locale.gen file like this:

ca_ES@valencia.UTF-8 UTF-8

And also tried with:

ca@valencia
ca_ES@valencia ISO-8859-1

When I try to run locale-gen, I get this error:

[pau@paugnu locale]$ sudo locale-gen
Generating locales...
ca_ES.UTF-8@valencia...cannot open locale definition file `ca_ES@valencia': No such file or directory

It says that there is no such a directory like ca_ES@valencia. But if I go to /usr/share/locale, the ca@valencia and ca_ES@valencia directories are in there.

What am I doing wrong when selecting this locale?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Selecting locales with modifiers

Nothing about this? Is this a bug?

Re: Selecting locales with modifiers

There is no ca@valencia in /usr/share/i18n/locales (this is the place of the locale definitions). Looking at upstream glibc and package file lists of Ubuntu/Debian, I think they ship a modified glibc containing that locale.

Re: Selecting locales with modifiers

OK, I see. But the translations actually do exist (in the /usr/share/locales directory). Do I need to open a bug for this?

Re: Selecting locales with modifiers

This goes back to 2006, Debian still carries 'new-valencian-locale.diff', see their patch tracker. Here are two bug reports from Debian (Valencian (southern Catalan) locale) and upstream (Valencian (meridional Catalan) locale), status "won't fix":

That's all bogus.  Adding locales is expensive.  If you want this kind of
support just create symlinks as part of a language pack.

I cannot find any more recent resources.
