GNOME 2 and 3

Hi,

Similarly to python2 and python (3) wouldn't it be possible to have gnome2 and gnome (3) available?

I now that python2 has a lot of dependencies but gnome2 also has...

AFAIK python2 is still active upstream, gnome2 is dead, development switched to gnome3.
There's also e.g. mate - a "redesigned" gnome2 - you can use it if you like.
