headless server: reduce hard drive spinning up

Hi,

I'm running a headless archlinux-box as a mediaserver, which means it is unused for the most part of the day.

Archlinux is installed on an SSD, the data is kept on a series of RAID-5-drives. I would like to keep the hard drives (in RAID-5) spun down, but I'm failing to do that.

Any advice how that can be done? I have setup laptop-mode and cpufreq (though I'm not an expert on those), but I hear the drives spinning up during idle time every 30 seconds and then spin down again...

Re: headless server: reduce hard drive spinning up

Hello zenlord,
even tho this idea looks good, it wont work ( at least in my opinion ) spin up - spin down is bad enough for hard drive, but in raid and in that raid 5 is worst to have them spining up-down. This will end up in data loss :S .
