Yesterday's Updates (09.11.11) udev/kernel broke usb support

that's right... udev spits out an error on boot i can't see, because it's CLEARED by the login prompt... again. i can't do anything but hit the reset/power off button, because somehow my usb keyboard doesn't do anything. i only know that udev seems to be the culprit because for a fraction of a second i can see a "FAILED" flash up next to it. i don't know if that's the whole story, because for a few days now i'm getting a strange message all over my login prompt saying something in the lines of "Couldn't open input device...". weird, but everything seemed to work until i tried to boot up my archlinux today.

seriously linux world... wtf. this borders on the insane. i just wonder, what i would do now, if i didn't dual boot any more. i now know, why i should never use archlinux in a production environment. i'm just glad it happened on my local machine and not on my remote linux only server. free software or not, something like that just can't happen and i don't care if i get flamed to oblivion for my tone, but this is simply unacceptable.

If you just want to rant: You've been warned on every disclaimer ;-)

If you want to fix this: My USB keyboard sometimes doesn't work well too. I suspect one of the udev rules to be partially incompatible with this particular keyboard. However:

1. Try pulling out and plugging in the keyboard in the login prompt, kicking udev in its butt a little.
2. If you happen to have SSH installed, connect to the box remotely

Disable clearing of the boot messages by editing inittab or look into /var/log/boot to see what happened.

Arch is not 'just works' distro. If you use it on production machines I'd recommend setting up one as a staging area so you can catch different surprises there.

udev package has become more or less a playground lately.

Re: Yesterday's Updates (09.11.11) udev/kernel broke usb support

Having exact same issue here. i can see theres a FAIL error when loading something related to udev, but since i have my / installed on a ssd drive i barely have any time to read it. after that I get to the login screen, but neither keyboard nor mouse do work, but its.not frozen since the clock still updates itself.

Tried the ssh, but my machine doesn't answer... It seems that the network is also not working (doesnt even respond to ping)...

Any suggestion?

Ok, I paused the output and Im getting this:

FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory

and a few lines later:
Loading user-specified modules [FAIL]

Re: Yesterday's Updates (09.11.11) udev/kernel broke usb support

More info: it seems that the problem is that the kernel is using /lib/modules/3.0-ARCH instead of 3.1.0-4-ARCH

Yes, it was more less something like that:

I had recently bought a new SSD drive, and I wanted to make it my / partition, so I cloned my old partition into the new SSD disk, and configured grub to use my new / partition.
I didnt give any importance to the fact that grub was still installed in the old drive's MBR. So when I upgraded the kernel, the /boot folder beeing upgraded was the one in the newer SSD partition, but the /boot beeing used on boot was still the one in the old partition.

I just installed grub in the new disk, and changed the config in my mobo to boot on the SSD disk.

Hope I made myself clear!

Re: Yesterday's Updates (09.11.11) udev/kernel broke usb support

I followed karol's link (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129970) (Thanks for that!) and got my system working by downgrading to linux-3.0.7*.  That was over a week ago. i tried the upgrade yesterday and got the problems again.  I get [FAIL] on loading user-defined modules during boot and then my wireless can see networks, but i cannot connect to any of them for anything.

I downgraded again the same way as before, so i'm good for now, but I figured if this was a bug it would have been fixed already.

Is this going to be fixed? Do i need to make any changes to my system to make it work the way it is right now?
