Adding "skip-innodb" in /etc/mysql/my.cnf no longer works for version 5.5.17 Is there any other option for disabling innodb to have smaller mysql foot print ? Thanks.
EDIT: I have figured out a way to skip innodb, but its not doing much. Right now MySQL uses about 350mb of memory. How can I limite memory to about 150mb max ? Thanks.

No I haven't been playing much with MySQL optimization. If I do figure out something of use. I will make sure to write something about, most likely on my wiki do.
