Do you have nouveau in modprobe.conf or mkinitcpio.conf?

Nope...
$ grep nouv /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
$ grep nouv /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

@wonder - nope... other ideas are welcome... should I open a flyspray?

do you have nouveau-dri installed AND nvidia-utils? because that is impossible
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
Offline
i think having xf86-video-nouveau and nvidia installed with the *ahem* magic patch should be enough to get this behavior. install xf86-video-nv and you'll get 3 different drivers loaded.

nope. only if it has nouveau-dri

I don't have nouveau-dri:
$ pacman -Qq | grep dri
dri2proto
xorg-xdriinfo
BUT I do have:
$ pacman -Qq | grep nouv
xf86-video-nouveau
After removing it, and rebooting, problem solved:
$ lsmod | grep nouv
Is this a bug and should I open a ticket? I would think both drivers should be able to co-exist (with one lying dormant) on a system without this behavior.
