[SOLVED] Screen brightness to 0 zero on boot
Hiya!
I just installed Arch in a for me very unconventional manner: I had to use the nomodeset parameter because otherwise my screen seems to turn itself off.
I have a first-gen i3 (i915) processor with an integrated GPU, so I had to add 'i915' to the MODULES in/etc/mkinitcpio.conf as described in the Wiki. I also added the 'i915.modeset=1' parameter to the kernel line. But to no avail. My screen turns itself off during boot.
Then, after installing KDE, I have the same problem with KDM as I had with GDM in Gnome3: it reduces the screen brightness to 0. In GDM I could fix this by adding 'xbacklight -set 100' to /etc/gdm/Init/Default as described at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127478 but in KDM I don't know if this works and if so, what file to change.
Any suggestions?

Kernel version is 3.1.4-1-ARCH
If the Matrix was real, it would run on Arch...

@ri: I don't think so... My screen doesn't actually turn off, the brightness is just turned to 0. So if I really strain my neck I can see something, but that's not a very comfortable position to use the computer... ;-)
After logging in it turns the brightness up by itself, but it's the not able to see the login screen that's very annoying...
If the Matrix was real, it would run on Arch...

I saw on another thread that you managed to fix this issue, mind sharing how? I have a G62 too and the best I could do so far was adding echo 9 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness to my /etc/rc.local but I was hoping for a more convenient solution.

I'm sorry, the
echo X > /sys/class/intel_backlight/brightnesswas the best I could come up with...
edit: BTW, in the meantime I changed to Openbox with SLiM a my display manager...

Finally this issue was resolved in kernel 3.5. By now available 3.5rc4 with the fix. Can be installed via aur linux-mainline.
To enable the fix need to add kernel parameter i915.invert_brightness=1 and Yeah! everything is working as it should. 
2 year waiting and we have the fix!
