"last" command and reported hostname from /var/log/wtmp for login

When you ssh in you get a "Last login DATE from IPADDRESS/HOSTNAME" message (default motd on Ubuntu) and your login is recorded.
This login gets logged to /var/log/wtmp and can be viewed with last.
I'm curious as to where the ip address/hostname is pulled from that is displayed for two reasons.
#1: I have a computer that I've logged into the server. Sometimes it records the ip address and sometimes the hostname. What am I doing differently btw the two cases? This occurs when logging into a Arch machine from an Ubuntu 10.10.
#2:When I ssh in from another Arch machine on my lan, the hostname is one I don't recall specifying and which isn't in my /etc/hosts or /etc/rc.conf. Where is it getting this hostname?
