Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

I'm trying to use an external monitor with my docking station to extend my desktop but I can't get it to work.

I'm using the intel HD video card and I already followed thoses guide
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … ual_screen

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier "old intel stuff"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "Shadow" "True"
    Option "DRI" "false"
EndSection
/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
options i915 modeset=1
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf
MODULES="intel_agp i915"
FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
mkinitcpio -p linux
reboot

The output of xrandr -q is VGA1 disconnected even if it's plugged in the dock or the laptop itself.

Do you guys have any clues?

thanks

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

Did you try without the xorg configuration? I'm not using a docking station but when I plugged an external vga into my thinkpad, it just found it automagically.

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

What happens if you try detecting monitors using hotkey combination (fn-whateverkey)?

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

Have you looked for log messages? "It doesn't detect my monitor" isn't much to go on...

I'm not sure what log message I should look at. I already looked at the Xorg log

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

Reading your Xorg log:

......................
[   185.149] (II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using monitor section Monitor0
[   185.149] (II) intel(0): found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1
[   185.149] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section
.....................
[   185.151] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 disconnected

When I was playing with Xorg I had several problems. One was that just xorg.conf was used, and none files in xorg.conf.d. I don't know why.
I've forget almost everything. But perhaps this link can be useful.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132381

I would try use:
xrandr --output VGA1 --on

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

I already looked at that link and I just tried what you suggested xrandr --output VGA1 --on and it didn't work either.

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

I'm no a expert so don't do what I say.
It looks like how your files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ there aren't read.
Yes, it says "I'm using" but it isn't because it use "Device0"
[   184.951] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
[   184.980] (==) No Layout section.  Using the first Screen section.
[   184.980] (**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
[   184.980] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor0"
[   184.980] (**) |   |-->Device "Device0"

I had the same problem, then I used  /etc/X11/xorg.conf
BEWARE, because a error make your screen black. And you will need change that file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf).
It would be possible if you start in console without X, or have a usb distro to get that file and change it.
From here, try the most easy configuration, and test if the changes work.

Update: A link.

Re: Dual Screen ThinkPad W520 with docking station

Have you looked into using default xorg settings and using xrandr to specify desktop?
