A few hours ago, I started installing Arch for the first time, working as instructed by the Beginner's Guide. I got through selecting packages without any apparent issue, choosing, besides those selected by default, only wireless_tools and netcfg. When I went to the next step, Package Installation, and it tried to begin installing, I got the following errors:
cat: /tmp/aif/aif-pacman_installpkg-exit: No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove '/tmp/aif/aif-pacman_installpkg-exit': No such file or directory
/usr/lib/aif/core/libs/lib-misc.sh: line 90: kill: Can't: arguments must be process or job IDs
ERROR: Internal AIF error, the following call failed: wait_for pacman_installpkg
Can't open input file in dialog_tailbox().. This should never happen
After freaking out for a minute about getting an error which "should never happen" I began installation again. I got an error during disk setup that time, and, being an idiot, didn't write it down. I'm willing to try to make it happen again, if you need me to.
After that, I restarted the computer and tried again. That time I got to package installation again, and got the same error as described above, complete with "This should never happen".
So I went to Google, and I went to the search tool here, and all either of them could come up with was this thread from last year, where an identical error was described. Unfortunately, it appears to have gone unsolved.
I'm not sure what other information to provide. I don't know what will or won't be relevant. If you need any information about my machine, or the options I chose when I tried to install, or anything, let me know.
I'm sorry to bother you all with this. I'm pretty sure I must be doing something wrong, I just don't have the slightest idea what.
Thanks for reading, and double thanks for any help or advice.
Edit: I gave it one last try, using the i686 version rather than the x86-64 version, just in case. Apparently I can't trust my computer when it says it can handle a 64-bit system, because it seems to be working just fine now.

Out of curiosity, which version of the live image are you using?
I had run into trouble before using the netinstall version(there was a problem with mkinitcpio that I couldn't fix) but the core image worked fine.
I would try making another live CD and trying again in the meantime, something may have gone wrong in the process of making it.
Try using that one.

Thanks, imiller. I was using the dual-architecture core image, attempting to install the x86-64 version.
Trying again with a new CD sounds like a good plan. Thank you.

Okay, I burned another disk, tried again, and had the same error.
So I burned another disk, super slow, using a different disk burner. Same error.
Looks like the disk might not be the problem.

According to /proc/cpuinfo, it's an Intel Core 2 T5600.

I have the exact same issue. Macbook pro.
Mine seems to be OK after switching from ext3 in setup to ext2.

Huh, that's interesting.
I used ext3 as well, but it seemed to work just fine when I switched to the i686 version.
I wonder whether it's one problem with two fixes, or two problems which cause the same error?

Same issue here. I tried to install Arch on a very old laptop (PIII600) using netinstall image (VIII 2011)
I switched to core-install iso (as suggested in other thread), chose the core-remote source anyway and succeeded.
But I think that indicates that there is something wrong with netinstall iso.

I just ran into the same issue using the packages on this cd:
e2a108a7027d47d813d1f9bb04ce6939a1df21fd archlinux-2011.08.19-core-x86_64.iso
I had / and /home as ext3. I ran setup again with all options the same, except that I changed / and /home to use ext4, and everything worked o_O
Not sure if this matters, but the computer is a lenovo u350.
