How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

I am having difficulty in setting up a connection between my Galaxy S2 and arch PC.

I have installed libmtp and have run 'mtp-detect ' command in terminal this is the output I get :

[ram@Arch ~]$ mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.1.1

Listing raw device(s)
Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=6860) is a Samsung GT-P7510/Galaxy Tab 10.1/S2.
   Found 1 device(s):
   Samsung: GT-P7510/Galaxy Tab 10.1/S2 (04e8:6860) @ bus 2, dev 3
Attempting to connect device(s)
PTP_ERROR_IO: failed to open session, trying again after resetting USB interface
LIBMTP libusb: Attempt to reset device
LIBMTP PANIC: failed to open session on second attempt
Unable to open raw device 0

Any Ideas????

I have searched Google & of course the forums and no good explanation or even  a hint of solution is avalable.

Are you sure it uses MTP? My Samsung (Galaxy S, admittedly) uses normal, sane, UMS.

Unless you've got a custom ICS beta running, the S2 should mount normally, not using MTP.

Duplicate of: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25174

In short: your device doesn't use MTP as libmtp understands it. It's a custom stack by Samsung and you're sort of just screwed.

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

First off all, Thanks for all your replies :-)

I am 100% sure that it uses mtp for connecting to PC because when I connect it to PC, it displays a notification that mtp connection has been setup.

There is no other option given while connecting ( I mean it directly connects to PC in that mode only). Even in USB settings there is no option to set it up in USB mode.

I know starting with ICS only mtp connection is allowed for connecting an android phone. But Y is it happening in Gingerbread?

Just for a few more points which MIGHT be helpful.
       1) Phone is NOT rooted.
       2) In Android 2.3.3 which came stock in GS2 it used to just cover the entire screen displaying the notification that I had an mtp connection and I couldn't even use the phone during that. Only way to use the phone was to exit that screen by pressing menu button which would disconnect the connection. Yesterday, I updated it to 2.3.6 and now it is much better and just displays a icon in notification saying mtp connection has been setup. But it allows me browse the phone. Thats an improvement. But still I am not able to mount it as a USB in it.

@falconindy : Thanks I came across that bug yesterday and voted for that. Thank you :-)

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

It laughable that android being a linux derivative has better support for connection in Windows than in Linux.

Anyway another point is that I had recently Galaxy Ace which had froyo on it. It used to allow me to connect the phone in USB mode. But I dont know what has happened in gingerbread that it doesn't allow me to connect that way.

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

I have found a working solution for this.

Thanks to following forum threads:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy … alaxy.html

The process is longer but works fine to be able to mount the phone in USB mode.
1) Go to 'Settings' > 'Wireless and network' > USB utilities  and press 'Connect Storage to PC'
2) A pop up will appear asking you to connect USB cable.
3) On connecting it will ask whether to mount as USB storage format. Click 'Yes'.
4) Done. It should now mount in USB mode.

It requires a bit of work but am satisfied that atleast SOME solution exists.

Any better solution?

Edit: I have found another site explaining this:

Unfortunately this is not an option for those of us using the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as it does not have the USB utilities option in the Settings menu.  Shame on Samsung for making their devices different than any other Android device.  MTP works great on my ASUS transformer, but not on my Galaxy Tab.

BTW: someone knows if the Google Nexus (made by Samsung) works with Linux ? (i know that it's a "mtp only" device)

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

Ah! finally I was able to setup a decent Arch Linux setup. It's a big bummer that I can't mount any of my android devices Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and EVO 3D. I am running ASOP/ICS/CM9 on both devices.

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

Installing gvfs-gphoto2 lets me mount it in nautilus (and perhaps thunar) as well, even though I get that same error.

Re: How do I setup MTP connection between Galaxy S2 and arch.

Correction: After restarting, it worked... make sure you REBOOT after installing libmtp and gvfs-gphoto2.

EDIT just for Inxsible: In case anyone else runs into this problem, see here for the minimal steps that got it working with my Samsung Galaxy S2 (SII) with Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1121607
