3g usb dongle and firewall

Hi!

I've been using my laptop with a usb dongle for years and never set up a firewall on my laptop.
Can anyone tell me wether I need a firewall? Same thing when using a mobile phone as a 3g-modem.

Re: 3g usb dongle and firewall

IMO any system that connects directly to the internet needs a firewall.

Re: 3g usb dongle and firewall

I was just wondering if the ISP possibly restricts the traffic to some ports and protocols. So I guess it's not the case.
Does Ubuntu have a firewall enabled by default? If not, there are thousands of users out there with no protection while using a 3g dongle

Uhmm....  yes, some ISPs do restrict various types of traffic, but that's A Bad Thing, not A Good Thing. They do it for various different reasons, but never to protect their users.
