netinstall configuration portion path problem [solved]

hmm, i just did a net install using an old version, and during the configuration portion, i select rc.conf to edit, and it opens to a blank file.
The message on the top of the screen states that i can go to another TTY and update /mnt/etc/<filename> yourself.  when i go here, /mnt no /etc exists.
what is in /mnt is boot, dev, home, lost+found, proc, sys, and var

all the config files are coming back blank.

to make matters worse, i just click on "set root password option' and it takes me into an unending loop

chroot: failed to run command 'passwd' : No such file or directory
chroot: failed to run command 'passwd' : No such file or directory
chroot: failed to run command 'passwd' : No such file or directory
chroot: failed to run command 'passwd' : No such file or directory
chroot: failed to run command 'passwd' : No such file or directory

Edit:
is that related to this ? http://www.archlinux.org/news/20110819- … ion-media/

Re: netinstall configuration portion path problem [solved]

Looks like a bad burn CD to me.  Reburn your ArchLinux ISO making sure it's no higher than 16X for CD, 4X for DVDs.  That should do the trick.

Re: netinstall configuration portion path problem [solved]

ahh, i forgot to mention the important part, only readers of this post would have known https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137394 , it was an old version 2010.08, it was the only media i had on hand.  sorry about that

anyway, i found that link mentined above, and it pretty much explained it all.

so i downloaded a fresh new copy of a net install and it worked great.  didnt have to update filesystem, locale, or any binaries. that was nice.  also, it copied over the config for the network that i setup before the net install.  that was a surprise.  So apparently there is NO, and i mean NO use for older versions of Arch linux laying around.  either you cant get the network to run, or the net install fails, and its just a mess.
