net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

I didn't really know how to name this thread, but I think the gist of it is up there.

I bring my laptop to school and back every day, and use different wireless networks in each place.

I use net-auto-wireless (n-a-w) to connect on boot, but after suspending, and resuming in the new location I have to manually restart the daemon to get a connection back. I'm not sure if n-a-w is supposed to handle this use case, or if there is a better way to handle it.

Any tips?

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

I was about to start a thread for this myself, placing a comment to track it back. smile

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

You don't say how your suspend is configured, but a work-around may be to use a hook on suspend to bring down the wifi-link before suspend (suspend log should show what is happening currently). A bit harsher work-around may be to just suspend the wifi-module.
As for your question, if net-auto-wireless can do it itself (like one would expect), I don't know.
Does it resume properly, if you are still in the same location?

Yes, for me it does.

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

I was also in the midst of researching this very same problem! Anytime I suspend or sleep my computer from KDE (the only desktop I've tried to do so from thus far), when I bring it back online the auto-net-wireless daemon resumes (or rather, the script is reported as running in the return from "rc.d list"), but the net-cfg_wpa_actiond is not running, and needs to be manually resumed. In my case, whether I'm on the same network or have moved locations, the network does not restart itself automatically.

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

I use net-profiles, not net-auto-wireless, so take whatever you want from this, but I stop it on suspend and restart it on resume - works fine that way. In my case, I use the default pm-utils script for netcfg, but that won't work if you're changing network, so someone should create an alternative that stops and then restarts net-auto-wireless.

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

Those of you have net-auto-wireless, please stop saying "me too" and provide relevant logs from wpa_* stuff. When you suspend, wpa_supplicant deauthenticates -- what is the reaction of wpa_actiond? For example:
dhcpcd[852]: wlan0: removing interface
wpa_actiond[674]: Interface 'wlan0' disconnected from network 'lsusecure'

After you wakeup the machine in a different location, is there a profile corresponding to your previous network in /run/network/profiles/?

@tomk:
I used net-profiles until very recently (when switched to net-auto-wireless) and suspend worked out of the box... you should probably investigate your problem further.

Also, putting a script into /etc/pm/sleep.d which stops net-auto-wireless will cure the suspend problem...

Arch Linux is more than just GNU/Linux -- it's an adventure
pkill -9 systemd

I would - if I had a problem. smile

Now tomk, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. Just provide those logs please, we're here to help you.

@Leonid.l:
You'll have to forgive me for being a little slow, but I'm on the newer side to Arch. Can you direct me to where I might find some of those logs? Specifically logs for the wpa_actiond since that seems to be what gets killed without restarting when I sleep my machine?

Re: net-auto-wireless roaming with suspend

Not ideal, but it does work. Guess I'll have to wait for a later version of netcfg to see if the problem ends up fixed.
