[SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

Since this afternoon (I made some updates, but I don't know what packages were updated).

The internet keeps going down (and it's not my router, all the other connected computers work just fine). I'm wondering if this is happening to any other Arch user, and how I can know what packages I updated, and if it has anything to do with them.

Thank you!

The problem was kernel 3.3.1, it had a bug, fixed in 3.3.2.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

Your upgrade history is logged in /var/log/pacman.log

While you're checking that, go through the other logs as well and search for possible clues. There's no way of telling what's wrong without any further info.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

And, if you would, please tell us about your system.
Wireless chipset you are using?
How is it managed? (Wicd, NetworkManager, are you just allowing a desktop environment to handle it ?)
Do you own the router?
Is it open, WEP, WPA, WPA2?
Can you see the router logs somehow?
What kernel are you running?

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

Kernel 3.3
I own the router, it's WPA2.
I am using Gnome 3.2 with Gnome Shell, using NetworkManager.

Tomorrow, on my laptop, I'll provide more information and post the logs too.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

By "going down", what do you mean exactly? I had a recent issue with NetworkManager (worked fine with netcfg) that involved the nm-applet icon changing to 'connected' for a brief second and then 'connecting' ad infinitum.

The solution was to disable ipv6.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

I don't think I have the same problem... I can connect, but it randomly disconnects all the time.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

I checked my dmesg when it disconnects, and I'm gettting "wlan deauthenticated reason 2" (something like that). Any ideas about reason 2?

Also, I think it might be related to Kernel 3.3. How can I downgrade to 3.2?

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

Bump?

I searched for "kernel 3.3.1 bugs" and I got a few results with 'wlan'. I just got 3.3.2-1, so I'll see if it's fixed.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

Same issue for me on Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B since few weeks now.
Upgrade to 3.3.2-1 did not fix.

One intersesting thing for me is that when I'm next to my wifi box, then there is no issue. As long as I put my laptop away (4-5m), network gets down (ping unable to resolve anything, but wifi still up) then wifi disconnects.
Tried wit USB Wifi dongle and get the same, so it does not look like a hardware problem.
Wifi strength is OK from my box as my cell phone has no issue beeing 10m away from AP.
It looks like it does not deal well with wifi when signal is "low" ...

After googling on that, I found this thread and many others. So I tried :

  • disabling ipv6 => no change

  • switch from networkmanager to wicd => I found wicd much more reliable but isue still present

Here are some logs I can get when "away" from my AP:

What type of wireless standard are you using? B/G/N?

When I  win the lottery, the first thing I will do, before I buy a new car or a house, would be to buy a goddamn Cisco XR 12000 router and enough T3 lines to wire a country.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

@wazyk, you're getting Reason 3, I'm getting Reason 2. I can't tell yet if the new kernel has fixed it, but so far so good, I need more time to make sure.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless internet always going down

This constant wireless disconnecting has been happening for me too since upgrading to 3.3.x kernels.
I am on 3.3.5-1 and it is still happening.  I can't downgrade now to 3.2.x because I've since had nvidia updates requiring 3.3.x.
I use wicd and have had no problems until 3.3.
I also have tried disabling iPv6 and manually starting the connection.  No change.

rtl8188cus chip using rtl8192cu driver.
WPA2

my dmesg:

[sb@precision330 ~]$dmesg | tail
[ 2139.774156] wlan0: deauthenticated from 3c:ea:4f:ee:4a:41 (Reason 2)
[ 2139.784824] wlan0: deauthenticated from 3c:ea:4f:ee:4a:41 to state 2
[ 2139.784834] wlan0: deauthenticated from 3c:ea:4f:ee:4a:41 to state 1
[ 2139.784843] wlan0: deauthenticated from 3c:ea:4f:ee:4a:41 to state 0
[ 2139.790011] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: US
[ 2144.330058] rtl8192cu: MAC auto ON okay!

[ 2149.370207] rtl8192cu: Tx queue select: 0x05
[sb@precision330 ~]$

(I see this was marked as solved by the OP but that kernel didn't fix it for me, so I'm not sure if I should start my own thread or not.)
