Temporarily proxify an arbitrary application

I know how to proxify an arbitrary CLI app with tsocks (for example).  However, is it possible to do this only temporarily?  Here's what I mean:

start application proxified
run it for some time
without closing the program, switch to a direct internet connection

or the reverse:

start application with direct internet connection
run it for some time
without closing the program, proxify it

Is this possible?  It seems like it should be possible given the correct combination of tsocks / netcat / iptables, but I cannot figure out exactly how to do it.
