I'm on a legacy nvidia card (FX 5500) and I've been having problems with my display for awhile now.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140496
This is a slightly upgraded system, but with the same crappy video card. I thought I'd found a modeline that almost worked properly,
ModeLine "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +HSync +VSyncbut the latest Nouveau update seems to have made things even worse. I took a screenshot, but the effect doesn't show up. The bottom third of my screen is covered in what looks like really bad scan lines. I'm running X with --logverbose 6 right now. Here's my Xorg.0.log. I'm not running with the 10-monitor.conf right now.

[ 920.546] [mi] These backtraces from mieqEnqueue may point to a culprit higher up the stack.
[ 920.546] [mi] mieq is *NOT* the cause. It is a victim.
[ 920.936] [mi] Increasing EQ size to 512 to prevent dropped events.
[ 920.937] [mi] EQ processing has resumed after 43 dropped events.
[ 920.937] [mi] This may be caused my a misbehaving driver monopolizing the server's resources.... Huh. I just ran xrandr to double-check my screen resolution, and it fixed the problem. I'm having problems with this all over the place, though, and it's just a temporary solution. If anyone has any ideas about what's going on and how to fix it I'd really appreciate it.

I just wanted to say I have the same card, running nouveau, no problems.
I'm not using monitor.conf, I let X do its thing. I'm using dwm as my WM.

It would also be related to my monitor I imagine, considering my computer was all of a sudden no longer able to auto-detect the correct settings. I'll test it against a different model when I get the chance, but that wont be until perhaps this coming up weekend.

The resolutions thing is a driver bug, it's fixed in kernel 3.4-rc7
