Hi.
I use Banshee 2.4.0 on Gnome 3.4. I can access the music on my home partition easily, but it won't play the music I have on a external drive. The drive automounts so I can see the files. Here is the output I get in the terminal when trying to play a song that is on the external drive:

Jompa, welcome to the forums. Please use code tags when pasting long snippets as they provide scrollers.
Notice the difference?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Ah, sorry. I'll remember that in the future.

Same. Do you also find that you can't transfer files/create new ones to the external HD? I get access denied. I'm assuming there's a dependency I'm missing.

Hi,
It sounds like it might be a permissions issue. What are the permissions of the mount point of the external drive? Is your user able to read and write those files outside of Banshee?

Assuming Jompa has the same issue as me (same set-up, same problem), using right click-> Properties-> Permissions:
Owner - throne777
Folder Access: Create & Delete
File Access: --
Group - users
Folder Access: Create & Delete
File Access: --If I change the file access on either Owner or Group it thinks for a few seconds, then goes back to '--'. So presumably there's something stopping me from changing the permissions; which is presumably a permissions issue?

I can transfer to and create files on the disk, but if I try to move something to the trash it says that I only can delete it. When I unmount the drive it says that it was mounted by another user and I have to enter my password to unmount.

Look and see if udisks or something similar like an automounter is installed and automatically mounting the drive for you when you connect it, with the wrong permissions.

How do I do that?

I recently had to re-build my system and now I don't have this problem any more. When I think back the problem started after I installed cdemu, so maybe the problem is related to that.
