Unable to boot kernel 3.3.8-1

Upgraded to 3.3.8-1 yesterday but after a reboot, the system hung at "Booting the kernel" message.

After many reboots to the install CD and chroot'ing to my install, the only way I could get to boot again was to downgrade to 3.3.2-1
- Rebuilt initramfs (several times)
- Reinstalled 3.3.8-1
- Changed from syslinux to grub
- fsck'ed /boot

There are no error messages, just the systems sitting at "Booting the kernel" so not sure where/how to get more information about the problem. Anyone seen this? Ideas?

EDIT:
64-bit
/dev/sda == SSD drive
sda1 = /boot (ext2)
sda3 = / (ext4)
/home and other partitions (mix of ext4 and xfs) live on LVM over mdadm.

Odd.. Have you tried the 3.4 series?  According to the dev public ml, it will be released into [core] pretty soon... In other words, if 3.4.2 boots, your problem becomes an academic one.

Indeed; I'm hoping that's the case, but if not then I wanted to start discussion earlier rather than later

I'll see what happens when 3.4.x hits [core], but I might changeover to the -lts kernel since this is my work machine and causes me great heartache when it's down   (And yet, it's still been more reliable for me than when I ran Debian stable on it)
