Gobi 3G modem and linux-3.4.2 using qmi_wwan

Since updating the kernel, I have some issues with my wwan laptop modem.

This is the device in question:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:371d Hewlett-Packard

On previous kernels I used the gobiserial module (http://www.codeaurora.org/patches/quic/gobi/Gobi3000/) which created the /dev/ttyUSBx devices and then I would connect to the internet using wvdial.

The new kernel has the qmi_wwan module which automatically creates wwan0 and wwan1 network interfaces so it seems i don't need to use gobiserial anymore.

But since I'm running a minimalistic desktop and HATE networkmanager is there another way to connect to the internet?
