I followed the wiki's instructions and now wpa_supplicant starts on boot and wpa_gui starts up with my DE, and is able to configure a network connection, but it never gets an IP address until I run "dhcpcd wlan0" manually. Why is that? Is there something more I need to do?
EDIT: Solution: put it in /etc/rc.local after the wpa_supplicant line

Have a look here for ways to automate that on boot.

More generally,wpa_supplicant doesn't know anything about IP addresses, nor does it care. It simply does the job it's designed for i.e. negotiating and authenticating with wpa access points. After it's done that, other applications can be called to deal with IP addressing.

Oh, I figured it out. I just had to put 'dhcpcd wlan0' in /etc/rc.local after the wpa_supplicant line. Simple! I guess I was just out of it last night, that should have been obvious.

Good to hear you've got it working as you want.
