[SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

Hi All,

After a update of my laptop, it does not fully wakes after going into suspend. It does not react to numlock anymore.  I have to push the power button for 10 seconds to shut it down.

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

I did a quick google search. This page suggested that I set my videocard in persistend mode:
http://scientificlinuxforum.org/index.p … topic=1469

So i did the following:

]# /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1
Enabled persistence mode for GPU 0000:01:00.0.
All done.
# /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -q

This did not solve the issue. The laptop goes into suspend (the power LED starts blinking), but when the power button is then briefly pressed, the machine does power-up, but after hearing 2 clicks from the speaker, i get a black screen, a full-running CPU fan, and no reaction to numlock.

Try the 304.22 drivers from AUR. They have suspend related fixes.

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

Hi x33a,

I have make the package, but I can't install it. Pacman does not allow me to replace nvidia-utils by nvidia-utils-custom:

[root@cedric nvidia-utils-custom]#

How can I replace nvidia-utils by nvidia-utils-custom without removing and then reinstalling all the programs that depend on it?

Best regards,
Cedric

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

I think the key is

:: nvidia: requires nvidia-utils=302.17

You probably need to build this to match your version of nvidia-utils and install the two packages together

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

Building the package itself is not the problem.

The problem is that pacman does not allow me to remove my origional nvidia-utils, as I have a lot of programs that need that program to be installed.
Can I force pacman to remove the package? Or is this a very bad idea?

Best regards,
Cedric

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

# pacman -Rdd nvidia-utils
# pacman -U ./nvidia-utils-custom-304.22-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

then install nvidia too.

Don't. This is wrong. Pacman is your friend, do not play against it.

The reason for a conflict is that AUR's nvidia-utils-custom PKGBUILD is broken. Compare it to extra/nvidia-utils, specifically to the "provides=()" entry...

Well, i don't know about that particular package. But, this is how nvidia-utils is removed, if we want to replace it with a custom package. If you have any other method, please elaborate.

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

The issue is that various programs require libgl. The official nvidia-utils (302.17) provides() it. The onefire's version in AUR (304.22) provides() nvidia-utils, and not libgl. So the provides() array should be extended. Similarly, nvidia-utils-custom should conflict with libgl, like extra/nvidia-utils does, otherwise people updrading from nouveau+libgl will lose X11.

I don't use nvidia factory driver and don't care to correct the PKGBUILD. However, you guys should. The pacman call with -Rdd overrides dependency checks which are the primary pacman's job. The problem is not with pacman, but with crappy PKGBUILD.

AUR is 99% broken, so please don't use tools like yaourt -- they will break your system. Learn how packaging works and  always go through PKGBUILD line-by-line.

Re: [SOLVED]suspend fails NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus

I am using nvidia-utils-beta from AUR, and it provides 'libgl' and conflicts with 'libgl', and yet when installing it, i first had to remove the nvidia-utils package from extra using pacman -Rdd. This particular PKGBUILD might not be fine, but in my case the PKGBUILD was fine.

Thanks for your assistance.

Best regards,
