Why can't I start most windowMakers ecxept xfce4

This is my kde err:

when i start other wms like openbox, fluxbox, they return:

I can only run xfce4, and I think my xorg.conf is correct as you can see below:

are you using "startxfce4" and "startkde"?

if so startxfce4 is smart enough to start X when you run it, starkde doesn't. so choices are, use something like GDM which starts X and presents a login inscreen which you can pick the WM to use. OR edit the .xinitrc file in your home folder and at the end of the file replace the uncommented "exec ____" (generally like windowmaker or fluxbox) with "exec startkde" or "exec openbox" then use "startx" to launch.

for future reference the term is windowmanager, WindowMaker is a specific windowmanager.

I can start them now.
MaybeI made a mistake.
I used to typed "exec startkde" in the prompt line, an enter
But when I add the command dirrectly in .xinitc, and use startx, it worked correctly.

yeah, see "exec startkde" is an instruction to the startx program it's not its own command, when you use startx it reads .xinitrc to see which programs to start.

you can also use .xinitrc to start other programs as well, if you want fluxbox to start with fbpager, torsmo, an xterm, and set the background to a specific picture you just add

fbpager &
torsmo &
xterm &
Esetroot picture.jpg
exec fluxbox

with the window manager being the last command

eh, i just use it cause it's already on my system. no endorsment expressed or implied.

actually other than esetroot i don't have any those in a xinitrc, wonder why i chose them for examples.

Or use hsetroot, since it is made purely for setting backgrounds. I use it to set the background for XDM. heh
