Cinnamon

Is there a chance that Cinnamon will be included in standard repositories anytime soon?

Re: Cinnamon

I have no clue, but I just switched to it over the weekend and I am definitely impressed with it!

That's irrelevant. There is never a time frame for any package to go into what you call the standard repositories. A package goes in only if a dev/TU is willing to take interest in the said package.

Ok, but given the popularity cinnamon gained this is to be expected, therefore the question...

did it.

just noticed this in faq:
Q: How many votes does it take to get a PKGBUILD into [community]?
A: Usually, at least 10 votes are required for something to move into [community]. However, if a TU wants to support a package, it will often be found in the repository.

and cinnamon has 235 votes. smile

Re: Cinnamon

If no dev/TU is interested in maintaining it, it won't go in the repos no matter how many votes it has.

Re: Cinnamon

Yeah, Yaourt is a good example. It has like 5200 votes and is still not there.  It takes the dev/TU or it ain't gettin there...

Tools like yaourt that automatically install packages from AUR will never go in the repos no matter how many votes they get. It's done to make the distinction that AUR is unsupported. Also, some packages can't go in the repos because of their license (e.g. acroread).  So there are many different reasons why a certain package isn't in the repo.

Re: Cinnamon

Right, I guess that's kind of what I was getting at, that just votes alone won't get it into the repo's.

Also, Yaourt in particular has a few know security issues, such as sourcing PKGBUILDS before you even see them.   This hasn't been fixed in ages, AFAIK.
