I'm afraid that my Hard Drive's gonna be failing soon, but I'm not sure. I don't know what a READ FPDMA QUEUED MEDIA ERROR means, so I'm goggling it right now somewhat apprehensively.
here's the error(s) as smartctl recorded them

So here's the problem as I experienced it. I can't actually remember whether my drive first began taking a hit on performance or if it started spitting out errors first. I had to re-install Arch Linux using the new install media, there's a real learning curve to get from Grub legacy to Grub2 (but GRUB2's pretty groovy, so it's all good) so I don't have any of the logs and stuff that would have the actual error messages in them. I'm currently extracting my last backup that I made just a day or two ago so that I can post a copy of the actual error message(s). I googled 'READ FPDMA' and here's a post that I found extremely interesting.... and scary.

This is a comment for the above post.

HA! Found the little sucker. Ahem, I remembered that after the new install I still encountered another set of those weird HDD errors, and I managed to find the one that I remembered. Here it is.

My /var partition died. So I went ahead and got a new laptop. Problem solved... sort of.
