Dear all,
I install arch on an old laptop: ASUS Z9100 laptop (it has two systems: windows xp and Arch Linux version 3.4.9-1-ARCH). This laptop has a 56K Fax/Modem. Its detail is(lspci):
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M6800N
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
I/O ports at e200 [size=256]
I/O ports at e300 [size=128]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: snd_intel8x0m
And it works in windows xp (can send and recieve fax).
I install both efax and HylaFAX on arch, but it doesn't work. The efax response:

I haven't worked with HylaxFax in a few years, and never used Efax. But from what I remember HylaFax was *very* particular about the modem. Did you confirm yours is one of the supported ones ? Back then there were really only a few that definitely worked, along with many that were only partially supported and even more that just wouldn't work.
I bought an older, external MultiTech Multimodem specifically for HylaFax, since it was one of the "definitely works" variey. Even then I had to reset it frequently. Maybe things have improved since then, and I remember doing a lot of terminal commands directly to the serial port.
So I'd recommend confirming your modem is officially supported, then checking if there are any commands you can run to check, reset, or manually test it.

Thanks dschrute!
Maybe the efax and hylafax cannot support this drivice.
Probing for best speed to talk to modem: 38400 19200 9600 4800 2400 1200
Unable to deduce DTE-DCE speed; check that you are using the
correct device and/or that your modem is setup properly. If
all else fails, try the -s option to lock the speed.
