I can't connect to... anything

I was talking with a friend of mine using skype. Out of blue, I got disconnected. A few hours ago wireless_tools were upgraded. I thought maybe that's the problem. Reboot, test, downgrade, test didn't help.

I can't check whether it is a hardware problem since I don't have another os.

To make things even worse, not even use tethering using my mobile phone works.

Any ideas?

Yes, one: you haven't provided any information about... anything relevant:

1. your WiFi interface,
2. software used to connect to the network, kernel version, etc.,
3. logs (no suspicious traces there?...).

BTW, downgrading a piece of software usually won't help solve the problem unless you know what has really gone wrong...

I use nm-applet and networkmanager. Stock kernel updated.

Not even ping works. Wireless networks ssids are discovered. Also, it appears to recognize tethering but it can't reach internet.

I don't know which logs are relevant.

So when you connect to one of these networks what is the output of

$ ifconfig

or relevant networking tool. Whats your IP address in relation to the gateway?  Have you checked rc.conf, hosts, or other relevant files for your networking setup? iptables misconfiguration? You need to locate the actual issue, or provide more information.

Thank you all for trying to help me. Sorry for not posting many details at my initial message. I was writing from my cell phone.

The problem was due to hardware. I reset the router and now everything works fine. At home, we are 4 users having Windows, Linux (x2) and Mac. The problem occured only to me. Usually the router gives headaches to the Windows user. This time was my turn. It is an old router.
