Shutdown/reboot Arch guest under VMWare ESX

I have an Arch VMWare setup in a VMWare ESX environment. I've followed the instructions on the wiki for setting up open-vm-tools and so forth. I'm running into an problem where if I issue a Shut Down Guest or Restart Guest from the console view of the VM, it only works the second time -- I need to issue the same command twice for the VM tools to perform the operation. Has anyone run into this before and are there any contraindications to trying the official VMWare Tools to see if that corrects the issue?
