file system problem

I have arch repos synced by rsync without removing old files ... actually I run rsync with "--delete-after" option seldom (maybe once per year or once per 6 months). So usually I get about 30k or more files in one directory. These directories listing works very slow especially when I'm trying to get in repos via ftp in midnight commander.

Are there any speedup tunes for this case ?

I'm looking for any kind of tunes (mc, sysctl and proftpd ...) for listing directories with a big number of files inside it.
