Some help debugging a wireless network?

Hi,

I'm experiencing some problems with my hostapd-based wireless network. Transfer speed is always very low, and sometimes the network just stops working for some time (as in, I can't even ping the router). I'm new to wireless networks, so I have no idea how to diagnose this. Did anyone ever encounter something like this? Maybe you know the tools that might help?

The machine used as a Software Access Point is an Arch machine with ath9k wireless interface, and the client is an Arch machine with broadcom (using the official Broadcom's open-source driver), but the issue reproduces when Windows is used on the client.
