[SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

I get

gdm-binary[892]: warning: GdmDisplay: display lasted ..... seconds.

for a multiple times, with the picture of a sad computer flashing in between, until I get

gdm-binary[892]: warning: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached, check X server log for errors

not sure if this has really anything to do with the X server but below is my Xorg.5.log.

p.s. I have tried solutions for similar problems, such as moving dconf and .config directories, but that didn't help. I also disabled autologin, yet same problem. So i guess it is shouldn't have anything to do with user configurations.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

What's the result of starting X via "startx" with a properly configured ~/.xinitrc?

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

I had this same problem and fixed it over the last 2 hours.

GDM in Gnome 3.6 requires systemd to work. It seems weird that the first complaint is gdm-binary crashing, but it is what it is.

First, read through and do a mixed installation with init/systemd. If you get any red warnings when booting with init, this comparison table will help you migrate your /etc/rc.conf.

Just here to back this up. I had the same problem and this was the solution.

Related issue: after the upgrade, gnome-screensaver didn't start automatically, so the lock screen didn't work.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

hi all.
i'm having the same problem as OP.
the thing is, i already migrate to systemd before upgrading the gnome.
there were no red warnings during the boot.
i don't know if this helps, but journalctl does produce 1 red warning/error. its regarding pusleaudio and bluez.

any hints ?

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

Same issue (with systemd installed)  but gdm freezes just after displaying the mouse instead of printing an error message. I don't even know where to start to tackle the issue.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

OK. Journalctl -u gdm.service yields "warning: failed to give slave process access to the display. Trying to proceed."

Any idea?

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

No but xorg-xinit wasn't install and no startx works but returns error

Where can I find info on the ck-launch-session

Edit: all xorg package were missing

xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils

Now those are reinstalled startx works and I get the window example. Will now check xinit

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

@sweetthdevil- Can we see your ~/.xinitrc? You do have the package "xorg-xinit" installed, correct?

EDIT: Just saw your previous response after posting this.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

Workaround: I was not able to fix gdm, but using slim as a display manager seems to work. Here are the steps I followed:

Assuming you use systemd as described in the wiki. If your session freeses, add the parameter "1" to your kernel command line in grub, this leads you to a bare bones recovery console in which you can disable gdm with

systemctl disable gdm.service

Then boot normally to a console login prompt. Install xorg-xinit and slim:

pacman -S xorg-xinit slim

Enable the slim service:

systemctl enable slim.service

Edit your .xinitrc (as described in the wiki) to make sure it runs gnome:

exec gnome-session

And finally start slim:

systemctl start slim.service

I upgraded Gnome on my laptop and desktop. They both use pure systemd. The desktop works without problems, but the laptop didn't. The gdm.service reports the following errors:

@sweetthdevil: startx &> ~/startx.log will save the output to ~/startx.log

@startover: You're using startx to start gnome... or twm?

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes after the new update

You are using systemd, correct? If so, you might try to make sure everything else is up to date and reinstall gnome-settings-daemon with a quick

pacman -Syyu gnome-settings-daemon
