Core, Community and Database missing errors

I'm installing using the mid December install disc and whenever I install the base system, use pacman -Sy or pacman -Syu i get this error, then it continues:
warning: database file for 'core' does not exist
     "     "                  "      'extra' "          "
     "          "             "    'community' "        "
is this a problem with old install and will solve with pacman -Syu? if not, how do I update databases?

Re: Core, Community and Database missing errors

The first time you update the database, why would you expect there to be a database there already?

Re: Core, Community and Database missing errors

you need to initialize the databases. Read up the man pages for pacman especially the options for the sync (-S)

Re: Core, Community and Database missing errors

According to the Beginner's Guide, you should only run

# pacman -Sy

when you first install Arch. You should read up on the man pages for pacman to see what the flags mean.
