[new feature] mkinitcpio: Possibly missing firmware for module (LTS)

When upgrading linux-lts, mkinitcpio spat out the following errors:

==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: bfa
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: aic94xx

Is this expected? When it says "possibly", does it mean it might not be missing? Or that it might not be needed? Or just that something is wrong?

When I searched, I came up with 3 threads. Two were from months ago and the other was about using Unity on Arch which I am definitely not doing.

I noticed mkinitcpio was upgraded yesterday or the day before so I'm not sure if this is related to that upgrade or the upgrade of the LTS kernel or the combination.

EDIT: and then my temperature went through the roof for no apparent reason. (Probably unconnected to the update but still.) Restarting seems to have fixed it, though...

Re: [new feature] mkinitcpio: Possibly missing firmware for module (LTS)

Why is it complaining, though? I've never used firmware from AUR and I don't usually get warnings.

Also my temperatures are high and fluctuating. (Not as high as before I restarted by 20-25 degrees higher than normal.) Yet I can't think what in the upgrade could cause that.

I got exactly same warnings as you, but have noticed no difference in temps

Sorry that i can offer no further help

interested to hear more....

I suspected they are false flags, but you temp data is puzzling

Ah, thanks.

I have no idea about the temp thing. I'm assuming it is unrelated. (Can't see how it could be related to mkinitcpio, at any rate.)

That is a relief, I just got this this morning and was anticipating headaches.  I'm not convinced that making people develop a blindspot regarding warnings in kernel updates is a such great plan though.

Headaches? Why, do you use your fallback image regularly? Have you ever used it? Do you even recognize the modules mentioned?

It IS annoying that mkinitcpio claims it failed with an error at the end because of these missing yet apparantly unneeded modules... Even thought it actually worked.

It doesn't print the word "fail" or "error". It prints "warning..."

I'd say it's more annoying that you're lying about mkinitcpio's behavior.

Except that it isn't the kernel. It's not even an initramfs image that you've ever used.

Re: [new feature] mkinitcpio: Possibly missing firmware for module (LTS)

I got the same warnings when I upgraded to kernel 3.9 (non-lts).  It only showed on the fallback image and not the regular one though.  I don't use those two modules so I ignored the warnings.  The fallback image contains a bunch of modules you'll probably never use while the regular image autodetects what it needs and gives a much more slimmed down image.

I could be wrong about that but that's how I understood it.

I'm not sure why it's giving those warnings (I've never seen it before kernel 3.9) but recheck the log:  It's probably only on your fallback image and you're probably not using those two modules anyway so I'm guessing only a small percentage of users will be affected by this.

Re: [new feature] mkinitcpio: Possibly missing firmware for module (LTS)

I've seen warnings for missing firmware for module on both default and fallback images.  I was thinking it was because I tweaked my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, but it's happening on all of my equipment.  It's not just one, but for many firmware modules.  Granted, I don't use the firmware for those devices it displays a warning message about.  It produces a complete kernel image, I ignore it and move on.

I have same error in NON-LTS NON-Fallback, I mean normal Kernel

I know that are warning, but any way to suppress/remove that warnings??

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

Re: [new feature] mkinitcpio: Possibly missing firmware for module (LTS)

I, too, was getting the same exact errors after mkinitcpio was first updated, but went immediately to the mailing lists and found the emails explaining that this behavior was to be expected now and didn't worry anymore about it. I was booting fine without that firmware before and I'm booting just fine without it now. Thanks falconindy for providing the necessary info to explain this at the point of originally introducing this update. The mailing lists are your friends guys.

Closing at the request of the OP.  He has some reasons with which I agree.
