Dear guys,
I noticed that my internet connection (Router and computer are connected via LAN-Cable) is slow sometimes, I notice that especially when using Youtube (on 1080p, sometimes even on 720p). There is no difference between using Youtube via Browser+Flashplugin and watch Youtube-videos as a stream in vlc. "Sometimes" means quite often and based on rules I don't see. It seems that I doesn't have that problem with streaming sites located here in Europe, but don't nail me down on this.
Sometimes I even don't get a quarter of the bandwith I should have with a youtube-stream.
More interesting, I can't watch a youtube-stream for lack of bandwith, but starting two Gigabyte-Downloads makes use of the half bandwith, two of them use the full bandwith, torrents also use the full bandwith. It seems that the bandwith is there.
Concerning this I contacted the support of my Internet Service Provider and was told that there is full bandwith on my connection (obviously as I can enforce that by download these Gigabyte-Dummyfiles from a server near my location here in Europe).
So there remain some possibilities (correct me, if I forgot some):
* There is a problem on the side of my ISP they didn't notice
* Maybe my ISP fails in peering (or isn't paying transit costs) (valid possiblity?)
* There is a configuration problem concerning my network connection
* There is a driver/something-in-this-direction problem on my side
* There is a problem with the LAN-Cable, but as I can switch to full bandwith by starting the correct or enough downloads virtually immediately this seems unlikely to me
(* I failed in some other points)
I would like to ensure that the points on my side are not the problem.
I was told to check for latest drivers, which I did:
My network device is an Intel 82579LM chipset, the module for that is e1000e, which is on my machine in version 2.2.14, on Intel's website there is a version 2.4.14 listed, published two days ago.
I think it is more reasonable to wait until this version is merged into Arch's linux-package than trying to bring this module in on my own, right? Is it expecable, that this module will go in there soon?
The release notes, however, don't imply fixes or problems concerning such a behavior, as far as I can say that.
Are there other possibilities that can cause this behavior and are located in my area of administration or can be influenced or at least checked by me?
What possibilities remain as a reason for this behavior?
I would be glad if someone could help me out with this.
Thanks in advance!
