I use the label from /dev/disk/by-partlabel/ which I probably assigned in gdisk to the partition. But I'm not sure if it has to be the same name.

No, you can't. A label, by definition, is part of the filesystem. If the disk is GPT formatted, you can use a partition label.

Cool thanks guys, I knew I'd seen a partition labeled before, probably when I was fiddling with GPT then. Too bad I havnt found a way to boot Windows 7 off a GPT disk.

I remember reading somewhere that there is in fact a way to get windows to boot in bios mode from a gpt disk and vice versa.  But it is really not a recommended way of going about things, and possibly not as reliable as one might hope (on an already less than reliable OS, that is no bueno).

Re: [Solved] can one label a crypto_luks partition?

Is it really wise to do that just to use a partition label? Given the problems with hybrid, I would personally want rather stronger reasons before even considering that option.
