X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

After upgrading (31/08/13) with pacman -Syu, I was unable to boot into X, or rather, I had a dark blank screen when X loaded. From there, I could blindly log in to a tty and reboot.
I could boot into single user mode without issue, and when I did, I reverted to linux-3.9.9-1-x86_64, together with dependencies, nvidia-304xx and virtualbox-host-modules.
This took me back to square one, with X working normally, so I assume it is one of these three packages causing the problem (or their interactiion).
Other users have reported problems with this upgrade, but there seem to be several more or less different scenarios.

I seem to be unusual in using the nvidia-304xx  drivers (most seem to be using 319xx although the nvidia arch-wiki page suggests 304xx). This has worked fine for me up until now.

I am using a Zareason Verix laptop, with MBR boot using grub2. The nvidia card is 650m.

I am inexperienced in reading the logs and working out what might have happened when X tried to load. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Output of dmesg immediately after upgrade:

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia#Installing
Which drivers to use - nvidia-304xx or nvidia - depends on which graphics card you have. 650m is a modern card, so why not use the nvidia drivers?

Edit: You can always check which drivers are recommended on http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx or http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames , as the wiki suggests.
'GeForce 6/7 series cards' does not mean 650m http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce#Generations

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

Thank you, karol, for that information and suggestion. I did misread that reference on the nvidia wiki page to GeForce 6/7 cards.

I am happy to try installing a nvidia driver from their own site (though I guess this would this mean manually updating the nvidia driver with kernel upgrades from time to time)

Do you think that this might resolve the issue I have with linux-3.10.3-1 kernel? if that is possible, should I upgrade first, then install the new nvidia driver from single user interface? or should I try installing the new nvidia driver first, and then upgrade?

On the nvidia site, there are several recommendations of drivers for 650m card, including 325.08 beta (at the top of the list), and various versions of 319, 313 and 310.
They do not specify the recommended version, though I suppose it might be the first on the list (ie. the 325.08 beta).

You shouldn't manually install the driver from the website, I only gave it as a reference tool.
The package you want is called 'nvidia': https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?name=nvidia
Install it like any other package. The current version is 319.

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

Now I understand! sometimes the simplest things take a while to sink in.
I will install  'nvidia' and then try upgrading again.

edit:
the current version of nvidia is 319.32-4 and this version requires linux-3.10.3-1. When I try installing these, I have the same problem as before, with X giving me a blank screen.
I can't see how I can install the nvidia driver without upgrading the kernel. Feel a bit trapped here.

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

There seem to be a problem with certain laptops with nvidia cards after linux kernel 3.10. Some people have reported the black screen problem similar to what you described, while others have a more serious issue in that the computer dies when attempting to start X.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167200

This only seem to affect certain laptops, and it does not appear that anyone has found a solution as of yet, except sticking to kernel 3.9.9 for now. This issue has also been reported to nvidia.

That linked thread might be a different issue. My system hasn't ever powered off, or rebooted spontaneously. It may be related, but its also possible there are multiple issues at this stage. I am not sure that it will be possible to solve this problem at a personal level, and that it might need waiting for the next kernel iteration, or at least for the admins to resolve what is going on with the 3.10 kernel. I just thought that they might need to know of different scenarios where users are having issues with it.

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

Yes my particular issue is not like yours. However, there have been many other laptop users experiencing similar problem to yours after 3.10 kernel. Mostly it seems to be bumblebee users that experience your problem with the blank screen. We do know that nvidia have yet to make their official drivers work with kernel 3.10 and up. The drivers in the Arch repository have been patched to work with 3.10. From what I have seen, this also only seem to be affecting laptops with newer nvidia gpu's. I fear there is not much to do with this problem until nvidia give official 3.10 kernel support.

My suggestion would be to stick with 3.9.9 kernel and the drivers that work with it, and don't upgrade those packages until nvidia has addressed these issues. If you have a look at the nvidia forums you will see quite a number of topics mentioning black screen when starting x on 3.10 kernel, and also a thread for the system dying. Reading some of the threads there may help you keep up to date on whether or not the issue seem to be solved.

Re: X gives blank screen after upgrade to linux-3.10.3-1

Sticking with the 3.9 kernal for now is exactly what I am planning to do, unless anyone else has any further ideas about how this could be approached. Its the only way I currently have of keeping my laptop funtional.

Hi Guys,

Please check my thread regarding this problem, i used a small hack to fix this issue:
