Well Xmas is coming
What would you go for more Ram (some nice low-lat shiny things)
or a
Larger Hard Drive (sata maybe)
:?:

Well, that kinda depends on what you have already.
With even the cheapest hard drives nowadays having mega capacity, I would suggest you look for a quick one. IO is the main bottle neck, IMHO.
Unless of course you only have 64MB RAM, in which case, get some RAM! And then maybe your Java apps will run ok

Like I got 512mb atm .... maybe more would help :?
Hard drive I got 120gb total IDE .... sata with a large cache 8mb+ maybe

In that case, I'd double your RAM.

yeah. ram.

Thing is will more Ram help system performance ....?
/me don't go there
Anyway ... I also want those lights you put in case to make it glow blue

I will also say RAM unless your HD is almost full.
About performance, I don't know. All I can say is that my current laptop with 1GB of RAM is more performant (especially when pacman installs stuff) than my old one with 256MB. However it could be due to the HD speed or other factors as I'm comparing two different systems. :?

looks like more RAM would help ....

Yeah, go get some bling! Or, you could get yourself a usb pencil sharpener - that'll impress the ladies! "you wanna come in and sharpen some pencils?" (that's a cracking euphemism if ever I heard one - but anyway, I digress...)
I'm pretty sure the RAM will help.
Offline
yeah. the jump from 512 to 1GB really makes a difference for desktop usage. I ripped out 512 for another box for a few weeks..and I was hurting...
I had to go buy another stick to get back to 1gb..
shabling!

Although, be careful, the extra weight of the 512MB stick will make your PC heavier. You don't want to add bloat do ya, boy?!

He's got a PC, not a race car....
More RAM! 1G is the perfect amount for a general use desktop, imho.

Emmm never thought of that :?
May need bigger power supply to power usb pencil sharpener lol

Well, RAM is cheap and getting cheaper, you can get it any time. If you want to keep abreast of current technology, I suppose the logical choice would be to put the big bucks into a SATA drive.
That said... I don't see how you could ever run out of drive space or RAM with your current getup.
(I found a single 40-gig HDD hard to make a dent in, never mind two of them.)

@Gullible Jones: I have two 80Gb HDs, and a 160Gb HD, and my usage looks like this:
Filesystem Mount Size Used Avail %used fs Type

/dev/hda1 /boot 1.9G 49.8M 1.7G 8% ext3

/dev/hdg1 /mnt/media 146.7G 97.1G 42.2G 71% ext3
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/station 38.1G 6.6G 31.6G 17% reiserfs
tmpfs /tmp 504.3M 6.4M 497.9M 1% tmpfs
/dev/hdb5 /var 3.8G 1.1G 2.8G 28% reiserfs
/mnt/media contains about 3000 MP3s and ~30 full length DVDs. 8)

more ram almost always yields considerable system performance. I don't have a sata drive but I've heard they don't make that much of a difference.

The first generation SATA didn't add a whole lot except making the cables nicer (any chance I have to ditch a ribbon cable I'll take) but the second generation that you will see take the market soon improve a lot on speed and such.

I'd go RAM! I'm running 512MB and the need for more is obvious when I do anything with large media files or work with any of my GIS datasets. I'm dropping a 2GB matched pair in this box soon.
That said, I also see the need for more disk space. I've got a 40GB and 80GB both IDE and although I don't use all of the space, I can see how someone could. Hell, some games take 5GB now.
Anyway, I'd just drop in some RAM until you need more disk space.

I wish I had 512, I only have 320 on a 700 MHz P3. What should I get?
