Calibre segmentation fault

Hi,

I have updated calibre few days ago to 1.* version and from that time calibre is not working. I am getting this error:

$ calibre
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

and

$ calibre-debug -g
calibre 1.1 isfrozen: False is64bit: True
Linux-3.10.10-1-ARCH-x86_64-with-glibc2.2.5 Linux ('64bit', 'ELF')

Python 2.7.5
Linux: ('', '', '')
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

in this test I am getting:

$ calibre-debug --test-build

In log I have this line (using dmesg):

[55634.391659] python2[2407]: segfault at 1 ip 0000000000000001 sp 00007fff66339468 error 14 in python2.7[400000+1000]

I have tried to remove calibre and install it again, also I have reinstalled python 2, but nothing helps me...

I am using KDE 4.11-3.

Does anyone knows what is the problem?

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

Are you installing calibre and all it's dependencies from the Arch repositories or from the binary install from their website? Working fine here (v. 1.1.0-1) via community repo.

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

Try uninstalling it and using pacman....it's in community, not the AUR. AUR helpers that try to do pacman's job aren't always successful outside the AUR :-) I'm suspecting a missing dependency, but not 100% sure.

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

You said you updated calibre, did you update everything else with it? ie pacman -Syu (or yaourt -Syu)?

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

I allays update all using yaurt -Syua.

I had a problem during update of calibre or python, I don't remember, that some files have been already present.

So I removed them manually. I know now that I should use -f switch in that case... It was the first time I see such a problem with yaourt.

And generally in last few days my Arch system started to behave strange, I have experienced few freezes. And why is ctr+alt+sys_req+REISUB turned off?

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

Try downgrading some packages as described on https://bugs.archlinux.org/36652

This means that pacman has lost track of files on your system or you have installed software outside pacman. Either way, you need to address this.

So I removed them manually. I know now that I should use -f switch in that case... It was the first time I see such a problem with yaourt.

I am not familiar with yaourt but if this is anything like pacman's --force it is absolutely NOT what you should do. However, as I say, I am not familiar with yaourt.

EDIT: I just looked this up and it indeed forces the install. You should never do this unless you know exactly what you are doing and/or the developers recommend it. Even then, you should think before you act. The only other case in which you should use it is if you positively wish a broken system and don't have time to wait for Allan to do it for you.

And generally in last few days my Arch system started to behave strange, I have experienced few freezes. And why is ctr+alt+sys_req+REISUB turned off?

It is off by default for security reasons. You can easily enable it if you wish as explained in the wiki.

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

I have downgraded sip and python2-sip package to 4.14.7 but now I am getting different exception:

RuntimeError: Failed to load the Progress Indicator plugin: the sip module implements API v10.0 but the progress_indicator module requires API v10.1

Thanks for helping me. At least I know that package is broken...

Of course... calibre is built against sip 4.15.*, so it will not work with any previous version.

Re: Calibre segmentation fault

Calibre starts without segfaulting here and I haven't had to downgrade anything. Try with everything upgraded properly as arojas suggested.
